Creepy Street

Creepy StreetTo you this may just appear to be a normal uninteresting street.

But for me when I turned into the street last night my blood ran cold, I could feel everything just draining away and I got a knot in my stomach. That may sound strange but not if your a cabbie. You see it is the perfect street to do ‘a runner’ from.

In this case it isn’t a park at the end of the street as is usually the case it’s just a strip of grass between 2 roads with treated pine logs blocking vehicle access so I can’t give chase with the cab making it easy for the creep to get away. It’s not just the strip of grass though but also the conversation we were having prior to getting to this street. He wanted to know how I got paid “Is it wage or commission?” commission I replied “So whats your cut? 20%?” Nope I pay my lease per shift and fill it with gas then other than Howard’s cut the rest is mine. “So how do you deal with difficult passengers?” etc etc.

It wasn’t helped I guess by the job I’d done an hour earlier when they had asked me to stop on the street outside a house that sat right next to a park and was perfect for a getaway causing my radar to spike and me to tense up like a cat ready to pounce I didn’t relax until the EFTPOS finished it’s processing and returned with “Transaction Approved” on the screen. So I guess my spidey sense was tingling a bit already when I got to this street. He paid by EFTPOS as well and made a big thing about “Would I prefer some of it in cash and the rest via card” I didn’t care either way and he chose card and I saw the “Transaction Approved” message on the screen and realised for the second time that night I had gotten all wound up over nothing.

Sometimes thats just the way it is driving a cab
